Xiao Long Bao is one of those foods that’s simple but totally unforgettable. It’s a steamed dumpling from Nanxiang, a town near Shanghai, China, where it was first made over a century ago. What makes it special is the hot, savory broth tucked inside a thin, pleated wrapper along with a juicy pork filling. That broth comes from a trick—using a jellied stock, or aspic, that melts when steamed. It’s a Shanghai Tang classic, and Singapore has taken it and ran with Xiao Long Bao. You can find Xiao Long Bao all over the city, from cheap hawker stalls to high-end restaurants, each spot adding its own twist.

Eating Xiao Long Bao takes a bit of know-how. Bite it wrong, and you’ll burn your tongue or spill the soup. The right way? Pick it up with chopsticks, rest it on a soupspoon, nibble a small hole to let the steam out, sip the broth, then eat the rest. A dip in black vinegar with ginger slices makes it even better. Singapore’s food scene loves this dumpling, and there are tons of places to try Xiao Long Bao. Here’s a BusyKidd’s list of the top spots where you can enjoy some of the best Xiao Long Bao in town, plus a little FAQ to answer your questions.

What Makes Xiao Long Bao Special?

Xiao Long Bao stands out because of how it’s made. The dough is just flour and water, rolled super thin. The filling is usually pork mixed with aspic—pork bones and skin boiled down into a jelly. Steam it, and that jelly turns into dumpling soup. It’s a Shanghai Tang tradition that’s all about balance—the skin can’t break, the broth has to shine, and the pork needs to be juicy. In Singapore, you’ll see twists like crab or truffle, but the classic pork Xiao Long Bao is still the star. That’s why there are more than 50 spots worth checking out here.

How To Eat Xiao Long Bao Properly

Eating Xiao Long Bao is easy once you get it down. Grab a soupspoon to catch the broth. Use chopsticks to lift the dumpling by its top knot, place it on the spoon, and bite a small hole to release steam. Sip the dumpling soup, then eat the rest. Dip it in vinegar and ginger for that Shanghai Tang zing—20 seconds max, don’t soak it. Eat it hot—cold meal loses its charm. It’s a little ritual that makes every bite perfect.

Why Singapore Loves Xiao Long Bao

Singapore’s food scene is wild, and Xiao Long Bao fits right in. It’s got that Shanghai Tang heritage but adapts to local tastes—cheap at places like Zhong Guo La Mian Xiao Long Bao, fancy at Imperial Treasure Shanghai Cuisine, or creative at Tasty Loong. It’s as common as SIA bonds in a way—everywhere you look. With 20 dumpling styles and 20 Shanghai Tang joints like San Ren Xing 三人行 and DING TE LE 鼎特樂, it’s a city-wide obsession. From dumplings near me to far-flung hawker stalls, Xiao Long Bao Singapore is a flavor you can’t escape.

Xiao Long Bao FAQ

What Is Xiao Long Bao Made Of?

Xiao Long Bao is made of three things: thin dough (flour and water), pork, and aspic—a jellied stock from pork bones and skin. Steam it, and the aspic becomes broth. A bit of salt or ginger might go in too. It’s basic but feels Shanghai Tang-fancy.

What’s the Difference Between Xiao Long Bao and Dumplings?

Regular dumplings—like jiaozi—can be fried or boiled, with no soup inside. Xiao Long Bao is steamed with broth, making it a Shanghai Tang standout.

Do You Eat Xiao Long Bao in One Bite?

No way—too hot! Use a soupspoon, bite a hole, sip the dumpling soup, then finish it. One bite risks a burn. It’s a slow 20-step Shanghai Tang enjoy.

What Is the Filling of Xiaolongbao?

Xiaolongbao (same as Xiao Long Bao) is usually pork with aspic that turns into broth. Classic Shanghai Tang keeps it simple, but Singapore adds crab or truffle sometimes. Pork’s the heart of it.

Istana Singapore

The Istana (‘palace’ in Malay), one of The Lion City’s oldest heritage sites, is the official residence of the President of the Republic of Singapore. The building was finished in 1869 and has impressed all Singaporeans and city guests with its magnificent beauty, both inside and outside, for over 150 years already.

We should note that the Istana is much more than a building itself – it is also an oasis of greenery right in the bustling and hustling city with a boundless lawn, an enchanting garden, a beautiful pond, and many charming inhabitants. In general, the Istana is home to 260 plant species and diverse wildlife. All this realm of impressive architecture and lush greenery covers an area of 40 hectares. Yes, and you can admire this beauty and feel the spirit of the Istana on certain days when the Istana Open House takes place.

Istana Open House: Dates and Details for 2025

This year, the first Istana Open House, the Chinese New Year-dedicated one, took place on 2 February 2025. And the second one is coming! The next Istana Open House devoted to Hari Raya Puasa and Labour Day will be held already on 13 April 2025!

Istana Heritage Tour

The fascinating guided walking tour through the Istana grounds lasts 1 hour and begins near the Main Gate. During the tour, highly dedicated guides will tell you the story of the Istana and its architectural heritage and open you to an astonishing world of its flora and fauna.

The Istana Heritage Tours are conducted in English and Mandarin with an interval of 1 hour – from 9 AM to 4 PM. During your adventure, you’ll get acquainted with the Swan Pond and a pair of its icons, lovely swans; walk through the Japanese Garden with an incredible combination of nature and traditions; visit The Villa, which has seen many important guests; take great photos at the Gun Terrace – and this is just the beginning. Sri Temasek, The Lodge, Lily Pond Garden, Ceremonial Plaza, Function Lawn – they are all filled with history and beauty and absolutely deserve your attention. Well, and the highlight of the Istana Open House is, of course, The Main Building, mighty, enchanting, and inspiring at the same time.

Be sure to take many pictures – to make life-long memories of this incredible day at the Istana.

Istana Open House: 2 February 2025

What Makes Haji Lane In Singapore Tick

Picture this: a tiny lane lined with two-story shophouses, each one painted in bright colors or covered in funky street art. That’s Haji Lane in Singapore. It’s smack in the middle of Kampong Glam, a neighborhood with deep Malay roots, and it’s got a story that goes way back. The name “Haji” nods to the Muslim pilgrims who used to pass through here, heading to Mecca. Back then, it was all about trade and community. Now, it’s a hotspot for anyone who loves a good mix of culture and cool.

Haji Lane in Singapore isn’t big—it’s actually one of the narrowest streets around—but it packs a punch. The shophouses, built decades ago, still stand strong, but they’ve been given a new life with bold designs and trendy businesses. It’s the kind of place where someone can feel the past while soaking in something totally fresh. Tourists love it for the photo ops, locals dig it for the laid-back feel, and everyone’s drawn to the energy that hums through the air.

How To Get To Haji Lane In Singapore

Finding Haji Lane in Singapore is a breeze. The easiest way is hopping on the MRT to Bugis Station—about a 5-10 minute walk from there. Take Exit D, head toward Arab Street, and soon enough, the colorful walls of Haji Lane pop into view. Buses stop nearby too, along Victoria Street or North Bridge Road, just a short stroll away. For those driving or grabbing a ride, there’s parking at Aliwal Street Car Park or Sultan Gate, close enough to keep things simple.

Come night, it shifts gears. Bars open their doors, music fills the air, and it turns into a low-key nightlife hub. The shophouses, with their old-world charm, glow under neon signs and fairy lights, giving the whole place a warm, inviting feel.

Haji Lane in Singapore is a feast for the eyes too. Murals cover the walls—think tropical birds, abstract shapes, or bold rainbows. Every corner’s got a surprise, whether it’s a hidden piece of art or a quirky shop sign. It’s small, sure, but it’s got more character than streets twice its size. People call it Instagram heaven, but even without a camera, it’s a spot that sticks with you.
