Lake Gardens Highlights: Things to Do in Jurong

Chinese and Japanese Gardens

Jurong Lake Gardens Chinese Garden

Jurong Lake Gardens just got an exciting upgrade with the reopening of the Chinese and Japanese Gardens. It’s now an even better spot for a fun family day out! Covering 90 hectares, this is Singapore’s first national garden right in the heartlands, and the newly refreshed gardens are packed with activities that both kids and parents will love.

The rejuvenated Chinese and Japanese Gardens have kept all the iconic spots we remember, like the Twin Pagodas and the stunning Grand Arch at the Chinese Garden, but they’ve been given a beautiful makeover. There’s also a new Cascading Creek area where little explorers can enjoy a nature walk along a boardwalk, spotting different plants and wildlife. If your kids need to burn off some energy, the spacious Pagoda Plaza and Ficus Lawn are perfect for running around or just having a peaceful picnic by the water.

Over at the Japanese Garden, it’s all about zen vibes. The Water Lily Garden and Sunken Garden offer peaceful spaces for the whole family to relax, and the kids will love the Breathing Gallery – an indoor exhibit where they can get up close with all sorts of cool aquatic creatures.

Planning a big family gathering? The Japanese Garden’s Guesthouse can fit up to 1,000 people, so it’s ideal for celebrations or reunions.

Lights by the Lake

But here’s what’s really going to wow the kids—Lights by the Lake!

From 8 to 22 September 2024, the Gardens will be lit up with over 300 handcrafted lanterns, light shows, cultural performances, games, and a food market. It’s going to be the biggest edition yet. And it’s the perfect way to spend an evening together as a family.

Clusia Cove

Jurong Lake Gardens Clusia Cove

When the heat starts to get a bit much for the kiddos, Clusia Cove is the perfect spot to cool off! This Jurong water park is designed to mimic real coastal shores, complete with tidal patterns, rippling surfaces, and even directional currents. Kids can wade through the shallow water (just shin-deep, so no worries!), play around with the sluice gates to control the water flow, and explore the channels leading to fun little rock pools.

One of the coolest features is that the water is treated naturally using a closed-loop recycling system, so no harshrk chemicals involved. And after all that fun in the water, you can swing by Fusion Spoon, a nearby café offering a mix of Western and Asian dishes – perfect for a casual bite. Plus, restrooms are conveniently located close by for a quick shower and clean-up.

Keep this in mind! Clusia Cove is closed on Mondays for maintenance (unless it’s a public holiday). If Monday is a public holiday, it’ll be closed on the following Tuesday instead.

Jurong Lake Boardwalk

If you’re an early riser, you might catch the enchanting morning mist rolling over the glassy lake—a truly serene sight. But don’t stress if mornings aren’t your thing; the boardwalk is stunning at any time of day. As you stroll or jog, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife—charming birds, curious water monitor lizards, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of playful otters might just add a bit of excitement to your walk.

Therapeutic Garden

The Therapeutic Garden at Jurong Lake Gardens is the largest in Singapore, specifically designed for children with special needs, such as those with mild autism and ADHD. It features a butterfly maze, musical play equipment, and scented plants like Butterfly Ginger, and Gardenia species. The wheelchair-friendly pathways even glow in the dark, and there are animal and insect footprints imprinted along the trails.

Skate Park & Bouldering Wall

The skate park is one of the newest and largest outdoor skate parks in Singapore, featuring five sheltered skate pods suitable for different skill levels. There’s also a parkour park with a 3-meter-high bouldering wall. For a post-workout snack, head to The Ride Side Skate Café.

Best Spots for Jurong Lake Gardens Photos

The 3.5-hectare Grasslands area is a popular spot for photographers, particularly for wedding and family photo sessions. With its tall grasses and bird hides, it’s a picturesque location where you can capture beautiful moments. Bird enthusiasts can spot Grey Herons and Oriental Pied Hornbills near the streams.

Forest Ramble

Jurong Lake Gardens forest ramble

Jurong Lake Gardens’ Forest Ramble is a paradise for adventurous little ones! While it’s officially designed for kids aged 5-12, younger ones can still have a blast here. With 13 exciting nature-inspired play zones, kids get to mimic the movements of animals from the freshwater swamp—jumping, climbing, and exploring.

They can hop on mini trampolines, tackle wobbly log seesaws, and navigate rope obstacle courses in the Squirrel Play area. The Otter Play zone features logs for balancing, challenging their motor skills. The Adventure Bridges will keep them entertained, while the nine different types of swings (from bucket swings to hammock swings) add to the fun.

There are even bright blue blocks to build with, a wooden maze, and hideouts with little bubble windows that let kids pop their heads up like crabs emerging from the sand! For an extra thrill, they can zoom down winding slides that look like snakes coiling around trees.

A little tip: dress the kids in leggings or long shorts because the metal slides can heat up fast under the sun. It’s best to head there early to beat the heat!

Note that Forest Ramble is closed on Mondays for maintenance (or on Tuesdays if Monday is a public holiday).
