History Of Singapore Cable Car

The Singapore Cable Car is a gondola lift in Singapore that provides an aerial link from Mount Faber to Sentosa Island. (Together with the Sentosa express monorail, these are the two main transportation systems for accessing the island of Sentosa.) The Singapore Cable Car stretches across the Keppel Harbour. The idea of constructing a cable car in Singapore was first proposed in February 1968. The project was part of the development for Mount Faber. The construction began four years later, in 1972. The $5.4 million system was constructed primarily to boost tourism. The Singapore Cable Car opened in 1974. It had 43 cabins. 

When opened, the system was the world’s first cableway system to span the harbour. It became the world’s first one with glass-bottomed cabins in 1999.

Singapore Cable Car underwent a large-scale $36 million rebuild of the entire system as a modern monocable detachable gondola. It reopened after the massive reconstruction in July 2010.

The Sentosa Line opened in 2015. The older line became known as the Mount Faber Line. The new Sentosa line construction cost $78 million.

The Sentosa Line connects the Siloso Point station to the Sensoryscape station (formerly Merlion station). Its stations are Siloso Point, Imbiah Lookout, and Sensoryscape. The Sentosa Cable Car ride typically takes about 12 to 15 minutes.

Singapore Cable Car operates daily from 8:45 AM to 10 PM. The main station is at Mount Faber Peak. Boarding is also available at other stations – HarbourFront Tower 2 and various points on Sentosa.
