Singapore football has colonial roots. It originated in the 1890s under British colonial rule. The 1st match in Singapore took place in 1889 between British engineers. A couple of years later, in 1892, a group of British formed The Singapore Amateur Football Association (SAFA). We know it as the Football Association of Singapore today. By the way, it is the oldest football association in Asia. That year, the first-ever nation’s cup tournament was held.

The first league in Singapore was initiated in 1904. It featured 12 teams. Mainly, teams were from the military, European clubs, and the School Old Boys. Only Europeans and Eurasians participated in the initial stage. Military teams won 6 of the 9 first tournaments.

Another important stage in the development of Singapore football was in 1921. Singapore joined the inaugural Malaysia Cup competition. And became its champions. Singapore succeeded in getting 24 titles in this tournament. Singapore submitted a team that operated like a club more than the Singapore national football team. It was called Singapore FA.

Singapore football reached one of its highest peaks during the 1980s and 1990s, with Singapore FA dominating the Malaysia Cup.

Singapore National Football Team

The Singapore national football team is one of the oldest in the region. It is nicknamed ‘The Lions’. The team represents the nation in international tournaments. It has four AFF Championship titles. The Lions are the only team in history to win every final in this competition.

Currently, the Singapore national football team participates in the AFC Asian Cup, ASEAN Championship, and other international competitions. The Lions have a passionate fanbase.

But let us return to the main topic of our story, the Singapore Premier League!

Singapore Premier League

The Singapore Premier League is a professional football league. It was founded in 1996, almost 30 years ago, and was initially called S League. It was introduced to replace the semi-professional FAS Premier League. It became the 1st professional soccer tournament in the country. The tournament’s inaugural season featured eight local clubs. In 2018, the S League underwent a rebranding and became known as the Singapore Premier League. The SPL is organised and sanctioned by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).

The SPL has evolved significantly over almost three decades. In 2003, the first foreign teams took part in the tournament. This helped to increase its competitiveness and expand its international presence. As well as to increase the level of spectacle, of course. The list of teams included Premier League players from Japan, Brunei, and other Southeast Asian nations.

The SPL has seen various numbers of teams in various seasons. The largest number of teams participated in 2012. That year, Singaporeans and visitors to the city got an opportunity to spectate a 13-team league.

The winners of the SPL qualify for the AFC Champions League 2. Since foreign clubs are not allowed to represent the Football Association of Singapore in the AFC continental competitions, the qualification spot is given to the next best-placed local club in the SPL if the foreign team wins. The top sides of the tournament are given a prize money award.

Seven clubs won the SPL since its foundation. Geylang United was the first-ever winner of the tournament. Warriors (formerly Singapore Armed Forces FC) won the most titles at 9, with the last one received in 2014. Étoile, a former professional football club from France that was based in Commonwealth, Singapore, became the first foreign team to win the tournament. This happened in 2010.

Since the inception of the S League to its current 2025-2026 season, a total of 25 clubs have played in the tournament. Balestier Khalsa, Geylang International, and Tampines Rovers are clubs that have played in all seasons of the SPL.
