What Is Padel And Why Is It So Popular?

So, what is padel? If you think that it is a mix of tennis and squash, you are absolutely right. Padel is a racket sport that is typically played in doubles on an enclosed court. A padel court is slightly smaller than a tennis court. Besides, it is surrounded by glass walls and a wire mesh. Players use solid rackets without strings to hit a ball over the net. The ball is allowed to rebound off the walls and the metallic mesh surrounding the court. In general, padel is easy to learn and accessible to people with all skill levels in all corners of our planet.

Is padel popular in Singapore? Absolutely. It is easy to learn, totally accessible, engaging, and great for socialising, which makes padel an ideal option for Singapore’s urban lifestyle. Loved by both casual and competitive players in the Little Red Dot, padel has been gaining incredible popularity for the last few years. It is interesting to know that the first padel court in Singapore – and the first one in Asia as well – was opened in 2013 at the Swiss Club. So, you can imagine how young this sport is in Singapore. Nevertheless, being the youngest, it is also the fastest-growing one, and the number of padel courts and clubs is increasing significantly.

The padel’s doubles format makes it a highly social sport – and an incredibly fun one. It is accessible to players of all ages (well, almost all) and is absolutely beginner-friendly. Are you a professional padel player already? You won’t be bored either, as there are multiple events, competitions, and other padel-dedicated happenings constantly taking place in The Lion City. And, yes, padel is an excellent option for a workout – effective, engaging, and fun at the same time.

Padel Rules

Padel is the doubles game. It is played on a rectangular 20m x 10m court divided by a net and surrounded by glass walls and a metal cage. Points are scored similarly to tennis. However, the ball can be played off the walls after a bounce.

The padel rackets are solid and have no strings. Padel balls are similar to tennis balls, but are a bit smaller. However, casually, padel is played with regular tennis balls.

Serves are always underhand and hit below waist level. The serve must land in the diagonally opposite service box. Balls that hit the walls around the court are still in the game (after bouncing on the ground). However, if the ball hits the wire fence, it is considered a fault.

When the ball bounced on your side of the court, you must hit the ball (before it bounces the second time). Or you can hit it in the air before it bounces. After the ball bounces on your side of the court, you can use glass walls – and even the glass doors – to return it to your opponent’s side.

These are the general rules. Of course, there are more rules to consider when playing this sport; however, they are pretty easy to understand and follow as well.

As you can see from this sport’s rules, it is quite similar to tennis. Nevertheless, it has some distinctive features. Let’s check them out!

Padel VS Tennis

So, what makes padel different from tennis? As we have already mentioned, the court for padel is slightly smaller than a doubles tennis court. The rackets and balls differ as well (however, tennis balls are often used). The padel racket is solid and stringless. The padel ball is a lower-pressure one. It is slower than a tennis ball and has a less pronounced bounce.

While the scoring system is the same, the rules are different (see the above section). The most unique padel rule is that players can play the ball off the walls after it bounces on their section of the court. Besides, padel always uses a doubles format and features underhand serves. In this sport, the main emphasis is placed on teamwork, over the individual power and speed inherent in tennis.

Is padel harder than tennis? Padel is deservedly considered easier to learn and a more social game. And here’s why:

  • A smaller court means less running, a more manageable area, more interactions with your teammate, and more fun, as a result.
  • Since the ball has a slower speed, it is easier to react to.
  • The size and material of rackets provide better control for novice players.
  • An underhand serve is much easier to master for beginners.
  • Walls are your teammates as well. Moreover, they help you to keep the ball in play longer.

Padel Tennis VS Paddle Tennis

Is padel and paddle tennis the same? While many people think that ‘padel’ (aka ‘padel tennis’) and ‘paddle tennis’ refer to the same sport, there are several distinctions. While both are racket sports that combine elements of tennis and squash, padel tennis is played in an enclosed court with walls and rebound shots; paddle tennis is more similar to tennis and has no walls. We should admit that paddle tennis is not so widely known in Singapore, so the borders between padel tennis and paddle tennis are literally erased for many people. And today’s article is dedicated to padel tennis in Singapore.

Padel VS Pickleball

Pickleball is another sport that boasts great popularity among Singaporeans – and which is, truth to be told, often confused with padel. So, padel vs pickleball – what is the difference between these two sports loved in Singapore?

Pickleball is a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis (can you see the difference already?). Pickleball is played on an open court with a lower net (no walls!). There is also a designated ‘non-volley’ zone near the net.

Pickleball is played using smaller and lighter paddles, similar to table tennis paddles. The ball is different as well. For pickleball, you need a perforated plastic ball, which is smaller and lighter.

Besides, pickleball uses its own unique scoring system (and not the tennis one). In general, it is slower-paced and strategic. It relies on precision and finesse, and not on power.

Padel vs pickleball – which one to choose? Both games are easy to learn, accessible, family-friendly, and fun. So, why don’t you try both?

Where To Buy Padel Rackets And Padel Balls In Singapore?

Actually, you don’t need to buy padel rackets and padel balls to enjoy this game in Singapore, since most venues offer equipment rental. Do you want to purchase your own gear? There will be no problem with that either.

You can buy equipment in specialised padel shops, sports stores, and online stores. Several of the most popular – and well-trusted – options are as follows:

  • Asia Padel
  • Decathlon
  • Leisure Sports
  • My Tennis Court SG Pro Shop
  • Padel Racket Singapore
  • Padel-Point
  • PadelShop.sg
  • pop padel
  • RacketHaus
  • Singpadel
  • Sportsshop SG
  • And many others

The BusyKidd’s tip. Start your acquaintance with this sport by renting equipment. When you are sure you want to buy your own gear, choose a beginner racket first (a round-shaped one for better control). Although tennis balls are often used for padel, we highly recommend that you use padel balls. The tennis ball bounces higher, and it is more difficult to control it with a racket.

Well, it seems you are more than ready to enjoy the game. So, let us figure out where to play padel in Singapore?

And lastly, we would like to share several interesting facts with you – to add even more inspiration and motivation for you to become part of an inviting padel community in Singapore.

Interesting Facts About Padel

  • Padel was invented in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico, by Mexican businessman Enrique Corcuera. Do you know how he came out with a new sport? Well, he built walls around his garden – to prevent the ball from falling in the neighbour’s garden while playing tennis. And voila! Humanity has got a new thrilling sport, which is believed by many people to be even more popular than tennis. And this is perfectly justified.
  • Padel is a relatively new sport – and it is considered one of the world’s fastest-growing sports. It has become especially popular after the COVID-19 pandemic. New courts are being built literally in all parts of our planet.
  • Padel is extremely popular in Spain and Latin America. For you to understand the scale of this popularity: padel is the second most popular participation sport in Spain (yes, soccer is still invincible).
  • Many well-known professional padel players have begun their sports career as tennis players.
  • Since 1992, the Padel World Championship has been held every second year. Argentina, Spain, and Brazil are all-time favourites. But who knows, maybe a dedicated padel player from the Little Red Dot will change the balance soon. Especially since conditions for personal growth and development in this sport in Singapore are more than favourable.
  • The International Padel Federation aims to make padel an Olympic sport.
  • Three padel courts can fit in one tennis court. That is why many tennis clubs convert tennis courts into padel courts, since this is much more profitable.
  • Padel is many celebrities’ favourite sport. Shakira, David Beckham, Neymar, Messi, and many other athletes, actors, and influencers have been spotted enjoying this game.
  • Last but not least! Padel is perfect for socialising. Its doubles format encourages teamwork, communication, and a sense of camaraderie. Moreover, it is easy to play – so it is accessible for players of all skill levels. Well, and no one has cancelled its benefits for health. An excellent option from every point of view.

Well, it remains only to learn several terms from the padel vocabulary (such as bandeja, víbora, bajada, and others) – and let the game begin!
