If you’ve ever visited Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) you’ll know that its residents are some of the friendliest people in the world. Strangely, its food gets little international recognition even though it is up there with some of Asia’s finest (thanks partly to the influence of its neighbouring countries of Thailand, India, Laos, Bangladesh, and China). Burma Social, on Tras Street near Tanjong Pagar, is attempting to finally put Myanmar cuisine on the map through its menu that includes wok-fried dishes such as its chilli-and-pepper-infused mala chicken, and broths such as its spicy tomato-and-coconut-based curry.

Tilly’s Irish Bat & Grill has a menu that includes hearty favourites such as toad in the hole (pork sausages in a Yorkshire pudding batter), beer battered fish and chips, and beef and Guiness pie with mash. Anyone craving a traditional Sunday roast can choose between roast chicken with sage and onion stuffing, roast striploin beef with horseradish, roast crackling pork with apple jam, and roast cauliflower with Irish cheddar cheese sauce.

Honbo, whose first restaurant opened in Hong Kong’s Wan Chair district in 2017, has now opened in CHIJMES. It describes itself as a ‘grassroots burger restaurant’ that takes a no-frills approach to burgers, avoiding excessive use of extravagant ingredients and focusing on the burger itself. Its menu offers 15 different burgers, from 1 meat patty up to 4 patties in a single burger, but also caters for vegetarians with its Impossible Burger. Definitely one for the meat lovers, this new restaurant on Club Street offers special Japanese wagyu beef. The name Wagyu-X (pronounced Wagyu cross) comes from the wagyu cross breed that all its beef comes from. This special cross of Kuroge Black Wagyu cow and Aberdeen Angus bull produces a distinctive marbling and ‘robust’ flavour. It’s definitely one to save for a treat if you want to try its 1kg wagyu steak which is priced at $300.
