Halal: meaning and restrictions

To start, let’s determine what ‘halal’ means. Yes, we know that many of you don’t need any explanations in this case, but some do.

‘Halal’ is an Arabic word that means ‘lawful’ or ‘permitted.’ In general, it is about what is allowed under Islamic dietary law. The term is contrasted to ‘haram’ (or ‘unlawful’ or ‘not permitted’) in the Quran.

Vegan food is always halal, for the most part. However, it must not contain alcohol since alcohol and all intoxicants are haram.

Things are a bit more complicated with dairy and eggs. The reason is that dairy and eggs can be produced using non-halal methods of animal slaughter. Besides, some animals can be fed with non-halal products, which also matters.

However, the main thing is meat. First of all, it must be Islamically slaughtered. Pork and by-products are forbidden. Birds of prey, donkeys, horses, fanged animals (dogs, cats, bears, etc.), monkeys, and several other animals must be avoided as well.

As you can see, ‘halal’ is not just about dietary restrictions but also about the treatment of the animals.

And, yes, alcohol and all intoxicants are forbidden, as you’ve most likely already noted.

Now that we’ve sorted that out, it is time to check the list of the best restaurants to enjoy halal food in Singapore.

Wong Fu Fu Halal Restaurant

Although Wong Fu Fu Halal Restaurant, Singapore is so young (it turned one year old this March), the place already has many regular visitors. And no wonder since the selection of halal dishes you can try here is pretty impressive. By the way, Wong Fu Fu is Singapore’s first halal-certified Taiwan-inspired restaurant.

Guests will find Grilled Seafood Noodle with Mala Soup, Taiwan Fried Chicken, Tater Tots With Taiwan Mochi Balls, and many other delicious specialties on the Wong Fu Fu menu. Kids can choose from Taiwan Fried Chicken Bento, Grilled Salmon Bento, and Plant-Based Hamburg (yes, that’s not a typo). And for dessert, treat yourself and your kids to incredibly tasty Taiwan-Inspired Milk Shaved Ice with various toppings. Don’t forget about Bubble Tea.

Even the atmosphere is tasty here.
